David Silverman, L.M.F.T.
Licensed Psychotherapist San Pedro & Hermosa Beach
Psychotherapy Adults, Children, Families and Couples
“In addition to being licensed as a Psychotherapist,
I am also certified to provide Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) for the treatment of trauma.”
My Approach to Therapy
My approach is solution focused, meaning I like to talk about solutions and strategies for recovery right from the start of therapy, instead of dwelling on personal failures and problems. This way you can learn some tools to help eliminate your symptoms first – before we move on to process any underlying issues. I offer a safe environment where you can feel free to tell your story. I have specialized training in cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness training, person centered, and narrative approaches. I also hold a certification in EMDR, an effective approach for PTSD with a 70% to 80% success rate. It’s my opinion that integrating a variety of therapeutic approaches works best.
Anxiety & Depression
Most of the clients I see with anxiety and depression are caught up in cycles of worry, dwelling on negative and self-critical thoughts. By the time I see them, it’s become a habit. The key is to interrupt these cycles, and find ways to “let go” of this type of thinking. Once that’s done we move on to relearning how to live a positive and fulfilling life.
I have worked in the substance abuse field with clients addicted to alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, painkillers, sedatives, and heroin. Most of these clients were considered “dual diagnosis” clients, meaning that they might have issues like depression, bipolar, PTSD or schizophrenia paired up with an addiction problem. I’ve been privileged to witness inspiring stories of recovery.
Children & Teens
In my capacity as a counselor at Venice High School, I treated students with anxiety, depression, anger issues, acting out, drug and alcohol use, peer pressure, eating disorders, and extreme oppositional issues with adults. I worked on motivating them to succeed in school despite their issues. I also worked for several years with special needs children, including kids and teens with autism, Aspergers, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and various other learning delays.
Trauma in Adults & Children
The method of treating trauma that is most supported by evidence is called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR. This method enables people to heal from symptoms of emotional distress that are a result of disturbing life experiences. The treatment is both brief and effective. It can be used in relieving symptoms such as anxiety and depression, as well as PTSD.
Sex and intimacy
Do you feel like you could be a better sex partner? Do you feel like you are becoming addicted to porn or sex? I work with clients who are struggling with erectile dysfunction, low sexual desire, as well as sex and porn addiction and love addiction. Sometimes these issues are best dealt with in individual sex therapy, sometimes with your partner. I sometimes use trauma focus solutions with people who may have past disturbing sexual experiences.
Every couple experiences issues where they just can’t see eye to eye. They have trouble negotiating compromises. Events occur, financial problems arise, resentment builds. Partners may have somewhat different sexual preferences or stray from the relationship. I offer a compassionate environment for couples to sort out their issues, and to resolve and manage differences.

“Over the years as I have worked with clients, I realized that the relationships we have with those we know and love can either build us up or break us down. As therapists, we help individuals navigate the complexities of these relationships. Whatever you are going through right now, know that there is always hope –and that I look forward to assisting you.”
