Margaret J. Medhus, LMFT DCC

Licensed Psychotherapist Hermosa Beach & San Pedro

Psychotherapy Adults, Children, Families and Couples

It is important for me to understand the client’s experience and their goals of treatment.  Helping my clients overcome the barriers to reaching their full potential is the goal of treatment.  I have worked with individuals with learning disabilities with the goal of treatment helping them to understand their disability by building on their strengths in order for them to overcome their weaknesses.

I am a Psychotherapist  trained in multiple theories and techniques using strength-based, short-term, solution-focused goals for individuals, couples, and families (infants-elderly) with an evidence-based, brain-focused approach.  Assessments and testing as needed. My treatment is individualized to meet the specific needs of the client.  I am open to coordinating my clients treatment with family, friends, other healthcare providers and government institutions.  It is important to have support and encouragement in order to make positive changes.

Play Therapy: for child, adolescent, or the hurting child within you. Oaklander Method, Art, Music, Puppets, Psychodrama, Sand tray. Learning disabilities acknowledged and evaluated.

Trauma: I provide services to all clients who are having difficulty with a serious life changing event.  We ,must always keep in mind that PTSD is not limited to combat veterans.  One may be experiencing a very difficult divorce and as a result experience trauma.  Everyone that has trauma does not experience PTSD.  Nonetheless, having a Therapist who is trained in trauma-based models will help the client overcome these challenges.

Children and Adults:    I provide psychotherapy for all individuals of all ages.  I have assisted 3-year olds and their parents with changing tantrum behaviors.  I work with individuals across the life-span.  whether it be launching a young adult, processing difficulties of getting older and finding retirement placing, helping a child overcome is phobia of going to grade school or adjusting to the birth of a new baby, pre-marital counseling, divorce, grief, aging, hospice, and loss I am here to assist.

Divorce:  Making the transition to a new way of life is difficult even if you are the individual who has initiated a divorce.  Divorce is about grieving the loss of a marriage, loss of a family and for many the loss of some of their hopes and dreams.  I am here to provide support to my clients during the process of divorce.  I also believe it is important for the children to receive their own support and parents begin to speak about how they will co-parent.  I have also assisted with court evaluations for custody and I am familiar with the divorce process.

Parenting:  In today’s society parents are challenged by social media influences and gaming with their children.  Helping families to co-exist without outside influences negatively impacting the family is the goal of therapy.  Identifying negative communication that exists in the family system and altering so that everyone feels valued and important in the family system is a hopeful goal of therapy.

Codependency:  Codependency occurs when one gives up their hopes and dreams for the sake of another.  The loss of self importance negatively impacts the individual’s mood, thoughts and behavior.  Improving self-care, defining boundaries and reestablishing a sense of self importance is the goal of treatment.

Competitive Sports Therapy:  Using visualization and relaxation techniques to unblock fears and doubts combined with empowerment to perform your sport successfully.

Teletherapy: HIPAA-compliant encrypted program for those who cannot or prefer not to travel to office.
